{"id":1918,"date":"2013-12-13T01:16:17","date_gmt":"2013-12-13T07:16:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/?p=1918"},"modified":"2013-12-16T12:42:58","modified_gmt":"2013-12-16T18:42:58","slug":"superstitious-day-for-some-one-less-shopping-day-for-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/13\/superstitious-day-for-some-one-less-shopping-day-for-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Superstitious Day for Some, One less Shopping Day for Others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Friday, December 13, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>For some people this means nothing more than the fact that yesterday was the 12th and tomorrow is the 14<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>For others it means that there will soon be less than 10 shopping days left until Christmas.<\/p>\n<p>For the superstitious among us today means all of the things above in addition to it being an unlucky day all the way around.<\/p>\n<p>While many may think that the Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> craze started with a certain movie character named Freddy the roots of Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> actually run much deeper than late 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century cinema.<\/p>\n<p>Since the 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century Friday the 13th has been considered an unlucky day in Western and Eastern superstition.<\/p>\n<p>Friday and the number 13 were considered unlucky by some on their own so it was only logical that both occurring at the same time would be even unluckier.<\/p>\n<p>In fact fear of Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> even has a name; friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom Friday is named in English and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen).<\/p>\n<p>Personally I have never feared Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> although I do fear not finishing my Christmas shopping in time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1920\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSCN1470.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1920\" alt=\"Astros at Spring Training\" src=\"https:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSCN1470-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSCN1470-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ballparksbeachesandbeyond.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/DSCN1470-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baseball players can be some of the most superstitious in all of sports. Players on a hot streak will keep wearing the same clothes or eating the same food just to keep the streak alive.<br \/>Photo R. Anderson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the arrival of Friday the 13<sup>th<\/sup> made me think about sports and the superstitious rituals that many players seem to follow.<\/p>\n<p>There are players who will eat the same pregame meal because they feel that to eat anything else would risk certain disaster on the field.<\/p>\n<p>Hitters on a hot streak in baseball are notorious for continuing whatever <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is Friday, December 13, 2013.
